Frequently Asked Questions
What is yoga?
What most people refer to as yoga is actually only ONE of the eight arms of yogic practice--the asanas (or postures). Linked together, the postures form a moving meditation. It allows you to focus your mind and to "get out of your head" by giving your mind a lot of things to concentrate on (the postures). The benefits of practice are many fold including, increased energy, relaxation, improved sleep, digestive function, circulation, muscle strentgth, flexibility, releif from many back and joint problems, improved mind/body coordination and detoxification of the body.
What are the benefits of yoga?
There are many benefits of yoga and they are innumerable, but some of them are: flexibility, releif of joint and back pain, improved muscle-tone and posture, enhanced immune function, relief of many digestive problems, stress reduction, detoxification, increased metabolism, as well as phsychological effects such as enhanced ability to focus, alleviation of depression and a general sense of well-being, self-love and acceptance.
I have never practiced yoga before--can I still attend?
Yes, most classes will be structured to suit both beginners and regular practitioners of yoga.
Do I have to be flexible or limber to do yoga?
One of the goals of yoga practice is to become more flexible over time--it is not a requirement to begin.
Do I have to be good at it (yoga) to attend?
Beginning to study yoga is not about "being good at it" or being "a natural". It is appropriate for people of all ages, shapes and levels of fitness, limber or not. It is a PROCESS through which you grow, learn and improve, accepting yourself for where you are in your practice each day.
How long does it take to be good at yoga?
Complete mastery of yoga--if that is ever really possible--takes many years. It is a gradual, growing process. Continued practice is the key, and no matter what level you are at, you will always leave class in a more peaceful, yet energized state.
Can I participate in classes without being nude at first?
No, all participants must be nude in order to maintain an equal footing among the members of the class. You're going to feel more conspicuous with shorts than without. Everyone else will be naked, and it's best if everyone is on the same level and equal--that's the whole principle. You will have time to "get warmed up" at the beginning when the instructor and the moderator are talking to the group before we start class. Then, the shorts should come off--if they aren't already.
What if I get an erection during class?
This rarely happens, and if it does, it's nothing to be embarrassed about and will pass quickly. You will have so much to concentrate on in order to achieve and maintain your postures and your breathing that this probably won't be a issue. If it does happen, it's ok--don't worry about it.
Are we allowed to touch each other?
Yes, there will sometimes be exercises in "partner yoga", which will involve touching and body contact between members, however, this will not be "sexual touching" and any contact of a sexual nature will not be tolerated and will result in the offending member(s) being asked to leave the session. Anyone who is asked to leave will not be allowed to attend classes in the future.
Will I be touched by the instructor?
Yes, as in any yoga class, it will be necessary for the teacher to touch you at times in order to make corrections to your posture and help you to attain the correct form. Once again, this will not be of a sexual nature.
Is DNY4M appropriate for couples?
Absolutely . . . bring your boyfriend/partner with you.
Will I have an orgasm?
No . . . you better not. This is NOT a sexual experience--it is, by nature, a sensual experience. IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR AN ORGASM, YOU'RE IN THE WRONG PLACE.
What if I meet someone whom I find attractive and want to date or hook up with?
Great! Just do it outside of class. Providing a situation for well-adjusted, healthy guys like yourself to meet and get to know each other is one of the goals of DNY4M.
Can I bring a friend to class?
Yes. Please make sure he is aware of all the things the class is and is not. It is a good idea to have anyone you feel might be interested in attending DNY4M to look over the website and read about it before coming to class. It would be best if he email's and joins the Yahoo DNY4M group before attending class. Also, bringing the member information and release forms available for download on the classes page of this site will help save time at the door.
What do I need to bring to class?
Please read "What do I need to bring to class" under the classes page of this site.
Should I eat before I come to class?
Yoga is best done on an empty stomach. Try not to eat anything for at least 2 hours before class, but if this is difficult, just do the best you can. Trust me on this one--you'll be glad you did.
What if I cannot afford the $10 suggested donation?
The donation goes to pay for the rental of the space and for the instructor's time. All members are expected to donate and share in the cost of holding classes, however, if this is truly a financial hardship for you, please contact us directly and we will work something out. This is not intended to be a money-making venture or a business--just a self-sustaining organization of men.
Do I have to sign a release form?
Why do I have to sign a release form?
The release form is, unfortunately, a necessity in today's environment of rampant law suits and must be on file in order to protect the managers, instructors and hosting facility and to ensure the continued existence of the group and its work.
Why do you need my driver's license?
Firstly, to make sure that you are who you say you are--otherwise, the release form isn't worth much. Secondly, to prove that you are at least 21--adults only, boys. That's all.
Is my membership in DNY4M confidential?
Yes. All information collected on the member information form and the release form is for use of the group host/moderators only. Please note that the information which is able to be viewed in your Yahoo ID profile within the DNY4M Yahoo group listings is available to other members of the DNY4M Yahoo group. You may edit/control the accessibility of this information by editing your group preferences (the button at the top right corner of the group homepage).
